CCAB, Friday, January 16, 2009 – Catholic High overcame Queensway Secondary to win the first game of their new season 60-37 this afternoon.

Queensway provided a stern test for the defending champions in this opening Group A game of the B Division South Zone Basketball Championship.

Led by 1.95m Jia Jun, who caused all kinds of difficulties in the Catholic High paint, Queensway managed to limit Catholic High to a 17-6 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Catholic High continued to misfire in the second quarter, just managing to outscore Queensway 11-7 with both teams having to deal with missed umpiring calls.

However, the turning point came in the second quarter when Jia Jun was whistled for his fourth personal foul while Catholic High’s Chong Ming Xuan attacked the basket. In frustration, he headed for the bench for the entire third quarter.

Despite missing his services, the rest of the Queensway team battled gamely and held Catholic High to a 11-10 scoreline in the third quarter.

Catholic High tried to attack the basket inside with their height advantage but were wasteful with their chances.

In the fourth, the re-introduction of Jia Jun failed to spark Queensway as they went down 14-21 and Catholic High’s captain Jabez Su also managed a spectacular block while running back on a defensive play.

The Catholic High bench players also got a chance to get on court in the final few minutes and point guard Johncelin Khoo did well with a converted jump shot. Forward Santhi then finished the game with a fast break lay-up.

Scorers of the game:
#14 Chong Ming Xuan – 15 points
#4 Jabez Su – 13 points
#11 Wong Kam Seng – 13 points
