Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have perfect winning records midway through the 2009 IVP Men’s Basketball Championship.

Defending champions TP lead Group A with a perfect 2-wins-0-losses record after they thrashed the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) 78-54 and edged out Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) 73-71.

Despite that narrow loss to TP, NYP, led by inspirational captain Wong Wei Long, lie second in Group A with a 2-1 record after they whipped Ngee Ann Polytechnic 70-53 and saw off Singapore Polytechnic (SP) 79-63.

Yet the teams who have written off the Singapore Institute of Management do so at their peril. Showing an understanding developed through years of playing together, the SIM team has been steadily improving. A lot would rest on their final match against NYP on Tuesday night.

In Group B, NTU maintain a perfect 3-0 record, after registering comfortable wins over the Singapore Management University (82-49), NUS (71-55) and Republic Polytechnic (69-51).

NUS, last year’s IVP runners-up, lie second in the group with a 2-1 record, with fairly easy wins against RP (67-50) and SMU (56-38).

In the women’s championship, NTU, NUS and TP remain the only unbeaten teams.

The NUS ladies lead Group A after notching huge wins against SIM (65-33) and SP (78-33). NYP are second in the group with a 2-1 record after they beat SP (52-49) and SIM (39-31). Their sole loss so far came against NP (44-51).

In Group B, NTU and TP both have perfect 2-0 records. NTU registered wins against SMU (74-43) and RP (60-51) while TP saw off the challenge of ITE (77-59) and SMU (50-33).
