Temasek Polytechnic, February 7, 2008 – The girls of Ngee Ann Secondary beat long-time rivals St Hilda’s 2-1 to capture the East Zone Volleyball Championship. Both team had entered the game unbeaten without dropping a set along the way.

Ngee Ann got off to a flying start, racing to 10-0 lead in the first set. St Hilda’s seemed to be more unsettled and nervous which led to many unforced errors allowing Ngee Ann to easily wrap up the first set 25-9.

In the second set, St Hilda’s fought back. Led by their highly-energized captain, Lun Wei Shi (#9), they fought back to overcome a two-point deficit and eventually took the lead in the set. Wei Shi converted a series of powerful spikes and that pumped up the St Hilda’s team. St Hilda eventually held their nerve to win the set 25-21 to force a final set.

Ngee Ann started the final set brightly, an effective service game and strong defense giving them an 8-0 lead. Once again, St Hilda’s seem to be undone by unforced errors. They manage to whittle Ngee Ann’s lead down to four points and seem poised for a comeback but Ngee Ann held firm and ran out 25-15 winners to become the East Zone Champions.
