Update by Mr Ian Chew of Catholic High. Thanks, Ian!

Nanyang Girls High School was edged out of the Basketball National semi finals in the cruelest possible fashion when they lost 33-37 to Dunearn Sec at a final group game played on 12 Apr Thursday. After leading for most of the game, they lost their composure towards the end of the match to a spirited Dunearn side. Point guard and key player No 7 of Dunearn Sec, also affectionately known as “Blackie”, kept her composure to sink two key free throws with 14 seconds left on the clock to lead her team to a memorable victory and a place in the Girls B Division semi final. The Dunearn team had needed to win by a margin of 4 points to advance!

The other game saw the Jurong girls triumph over Anglican High 52-47 to also book a place in the semi final for their team. Though the scoreline was close, Jurong led throughout the game and never looked in danger of surrendering their lead through a more balanced and well coordinated team play.

In the final match of the boys’ quarter final grouping, Catholic High cruised to a 55-40 win over fellow South Zone rival Gan Eng Seng Sec. Though the match was academic as both teams had already qualified for the semi finals, both teams were not prepared to rest on their laurels but instead put on a great show for their supporters. Catholic High started the brighter of the 2 teams, jumping to an early 21-5 lead after the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter, with the scores at 55-32 in Catholic High’s favor, Gan Eng Seng mounted a late 8-0 charge to close the gap to 40-55. However, time ran out and Catholic High held on to win. They will next face Unity Sec in 16 April Monday’s semi final while Gan Eng Seng will play New Town Sec in the other semi final at the same time.

The final match between Woodlands Ring Sec and Presbyterian High, a replay of the North Zone final match up, saw Woodlands Ring again emerging 84-73 winners.
