Choa Chu Kang Sports Stadium, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 — Singapore Sports School finished first in the C Division girls’ 4×400 metres relay final at the 55th National Schools Track and Field Championships. It was their ninth victory in 11 years in this event.

SSP clocked a time of 4 minutes 15.90 seconds to win by over eight seconds. Nanyang Girls’ High were second in 4:24.60, while Cedar Girls’ Secondary came in third in 4:27.09. It was the greatest margin of victory since SSP finished 11.60 seconds ahead of second-placed CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School in the 2006 final.

Singapore Sports School led from start to finish to win in the seventh fastest time in C Division history at these championships. The race for second place saw Cedar and Nanyang locked in a see-saw battle, before the latter’s anchor runner kicked in the final 200m to take silver by 2.49 seconds.

SSP’s first runner Portia Tan said, “It was quite fun for us. All of us put in our best effort during the race.”

Diane Hilary Pragasam, the individual 400m winner who ran the second leg for SSP, added, “There was already a lead, so I just tried to continue with it.”

Third runner Iman Fandi Ahmad, who finished second behind Diane in the 400m, said, “I was very nervous at first, because I was afraid of the girl behind me (would catch up). But I just ran as fast as I could, so I could pass the baton on to our next runner.”

Anchor leg runner Ismi Zakiah had a huge lead, but would not let her guard down, saying, “I think I’m safe but I still wanted to do my best, so I did my best to run as fast as I can.”

The C Division 4x400m record is 4:12.84 and was set in 2004 by Singapore Sports School.
