Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 — Jannah Wong of Raffles Institution (RI) clocked a time of 14.91 seconds to bag the girls’ A Division 100m hurdles gold medal at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.

In the morning heats, Jannah set a new meet, national junior and under-19 record of 14.69 seconds. It was a new personal best by over 0.4 seconds and bettered the A Division record of 15.03s set in 2010 by RI alumna, Inez Leong. It also lowered Dipna Lim Prasad’s junior and under-19 record of 14.72s set in October 2009 at the Malaysia Open.

The RI student, who completed a six-for-six sweep of sprint hurdle titles at the national schools championships since 2009, commented, “I feel very happy. I did not expect myself to do that well.”

Jannah still holds the national youth record, but saw her B and C Division meet records, as well as her national under-15 mark, broken in the heats by Singapore Sports School athletes, Nur Izlyn and Tia Louise Rozario.

“It is quite nice to see people improving. Records are meant to be broken,” laughed Jannah.

Teammate Laura Tan clinched silver with a timing of 16.17s, while Natalie Tan of Anglo-Chinese Junior College finished third in 16.69s.

The only other female athletes in the last 26 years to win six straight gold medals in the same event are Chan Zhi Xuan (Discus, 2007 to 2012) and Rahmah Begum (1500m, 1995 to 2000).
