Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, May 16, 2012 — National Junior College eased to a 7-0 win over Millennia Institute in the National A Division Girls’ Floorball Championship.

Kelly Ang (#3) was NJC’s top scorer in the game with five goals while Petrina Yeow (#14) and Ng Sijia chipped in with one goal each.

The win in their final first round group game improved NJC’s win-loss record to 3-2 but it was still not enough to get them a place in the semi-finals.

As for Millennia, they finished Round 1 without a win in five games.

“This was our biggest win so far,” said NJC captain Pang Yuxian. “I was happy that we worked as a team. We have come very far after not starting off well.”

NJC started the season with a 9-1 defeat by River Valley High but picked themselves up to beat Innova Junior College 3-1 and Raffles Institution 5-4 in their next two games to raise their hopes of a semi-final spot. However, a 6-2 defeat by Victoria Junior College put paid to those hopes.

NJC have 10 JC 2s in the team with seven members having played floorball only since Secondary 3.

“They have improved from match to match. Although they lost their first match 9-1, they were not disappointed and played harder over the next few matches,” said NJC head coach Alvin Tay.

“Initially it was difficult for them to understand the gameplay [of floorball], their body posture. But once they got the hang of it, they would even do their own practise,” added the coach.

As for who he thought the top four would be, Alvin said: “TJ first, VJ, MJ and then RV (River Valley). RI might qualify if they beat VJ.”

When asked about how she would rank the top four, Yuxian said: VJ first, then TJ, MJ and RV.”
