Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, January 19, 2009 – Seng Kang Secondary beat Anderson Secondary 67-49 in a B Division North Zone Basketball Championship game.

Despite the scoreline, Seng Kang did not have an easy win even though they had two Singapore Schools players in Gerald (#9) and Han Boon (#14).

During the first quarter, The Seng Kang defense was porous with Anderson able to make several easy baskets with practically no one blocking.

Seng Kang finally shook off their lethargy with Han Boon (#14) and captain Lester (#10) spearheading their attack.

Lester used his speed to spark numerous fast breaks while Han Boon consistently crashed the board to help their team pull ahead with a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter, Anderson, who were obviously smaller in size, used their accurate shooting to score most of their points. Adrian Chia (Anderson, #12) had several successful baskets to reduce the Seng Kang lead.

However, the Anderson team could do little to stop Han Boon from getting most of the offensive and defensive rebounds and scoring easy baskets.

Gerald (Seng Kang, #9) however did not have an easy time in the second quarter. He was man-marked by Anderson’s hardworking defence and he had a difficult time driving towards the basket for his trademark layup.

With 1min left in the second, Seng Kang’s point guard Shilong (#13) scored a 3-pointer to give his team a nine-point lead at half-time.

Anderson came back in the third quarter, trailing at one point by four points. Both teams started to have foul troubles, with numerous players on three fouls.

With Gerald off form, the Seng Kang coach had to call on Han Boon and another 1.90+ cm-tall centre, Fangqi (#15), to help with the the defence.

Seng Kang also had to depend on their captain Lester to score crucial points.

With five minutes left in the third quarter, Seng Kang started to tighten up their defence, forcing several Anderson turnovers. Both Lester and Han Boon also drove to the basket, drawing fouls.

Han Boon scored six points in a two-minute span to ensure that Seng Kang led by 12 points at the start of the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Anderson started to show their beautiful teamwork and accurate shooting. Sengkang continued to miss easy baskets and saw their lead drop to six points.

With four minutes to go, Han Boon got his fifth foul and dropped out of the game. However, Gerald finally found his form and stole severals balls. Together with his teammate Lester, they caused serious trouble for Anderson and Seng Kang finally wrapped up the game 67-49.
