Toa Payoh Sports Hall, Thursday, April 5, 2018 — The second last day of the National Schools Wushu Championship saw contestants in the last of their chances to improve their school’s divisional placings with their individual points. For the rare few, it was securing the sweet achievement of three gold medals – the maximum number individual contestants can achieve.

One of the triple gold medallists was Le Yin Shuen from Nanyang Girls’ High School. Excelling in the B Division girls’ 1st International Spear event, she earned an above 9.00 score of 9.16, placing her first among 17 other competitors. She edged out teammate Isabel Chua who scored an equally remarkable 9.11.

Ong Li Cheng of Temasek Junior College, also completed her trio of gold when she topped the A girls’ 1st International Spear event with a score of 8.71.

Other triple title winners include Josephine Lee of Meridian Junior College, Ong Pang Zan of Victoria Junior College, Nanyang Girls’ Crystal Chia and Zoe Tan, Randall Lim and Malcom Lai of Chung Cheng High (Yishun), Nicholas Ngooi of Hwa Chong and Anderson Secondary’s Foo Guo Yi.

VJC’s Ong cut it close especially near the end of his routine when he lost his balance. With the mistake affecting his score, he earned an 8.86 to tie with Hwa Chong’s Nicholas Aw. But Ong managed to gain his third gold after considering the invalid scores.

The B Division boys’ 2nd International Cudgel started out with an unprecedented misfortune. First on the carpet was Tiong Heng Rui of Chung Cheng High (Main). Early in his routine, his cudgel broke when he struck it on the carpet as part of the routine. Picking up the broken pieces of his cudgel, he stopped his routine and exited the carpet in dismay.

Given another chance to perform again, he walked on to the carpet amid shouts of encouragement from spectators. Teammate or not, athletes from various schools stood to cheer Heng Rui on. He completed his second attempt with a different cudgel to earn a 7.50 score after a costly one point penalty.

For the boys’ event, it was Angus Quek of Maris Stella High School that came out on top of the 19 competitors with an 8.85 score. Edwin Low of Chung Cheng High (Main) and Anderson Secondary’s Justin Poon followed with 8.76 each, with Justin taking the silver.

Day six of the National Schools Wushu Championship concludes all individual taolu events, with the next day’s group quanshu and weapon events to round up the team divisional placings.
