Bedok Reservoir Park, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 — Elizabeth Liau shrugged off a recent injury to defend her individual title at this year’s National Schools Cross Country Championships, helping CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School to its first-ever B Division girls’ team title.

“I am very happy because I was injured weeks ago,” said Elizabeth, who stopped the clock at 15 minutes 27 seconds, 21 seconds ahead of Cedar Girls’ Kylie Tan. “Our second fastest runner was injured and she couldn’t run today, so we are very proud of what we achieved.”

This was also Elizabeth’s third-straight individual gold, after topping last year’s B girls’ race and the C girls’ the year before. Cedar Girls’ Secondary School won the C girls’ team title, after Claudia Tang and Giselle Enlund placed first and second in the individual competition.

Hwa Chong Institution retained the A girls’ team title to help the school sweep all four divisions it contested. Four Hwa Chong girls made the individual top 10, with Vera Wah clocking 15:27, a full minute behind individual champion Toh Ting Xuan from Raffles Institution. Hwa Chong also won all three boys’ divisional team titles on offer for the first time.

“There was healthy competition from the other schools,” said Hwa Chong’s coach Steven Quek. “I’m very happy for the team. Everyone – athletes and teachers worked hard. We will continue our efforts to train consistently.”

Quek coached Raffles Institution to a similar sweep of A, B and C boys team titles, along with the A girls’ championship in 2014, while Victoria School and Victoria Junior College earned back-to-back quadruples in 1996 and 1997.

In the B Division, Evergreen Secondary School and Jurong Secondary School were second and third in the team competition. Evergreen had two runners placed in the top 10 individual finishers, Nur Humairah and Sonia Koh in fifth and tenth, respectively, while Jurong had Ki Wonyi in sixth.

Cedar Girls’ Claudia Tang emerged individual champion in the C girls’ competition with 15:46, while team mate Giselle finished second, a minute behind.

“I feel happy because I improved a lot. I get most of my motivation from my team because we support each other every day, and from my coach Mr Chan,” said Claudia.
