OCBC Arena, Wednesday, May 17, 2017 — Raffles Institution (RI) continued their undefeated streak to defeat Dunman High School (DHS) 57-17 in the National A Division Basketball Championship.

With this win, RI have a 7-0 win-loss record since their round one games. They will advance to the semi-final as first of group X and face National Junior College next.

On the other hand, this loss gives DHS a 5-1 win-loss record since their round one games. They will also advance to the semi-final as second of group X to face Hwa Chong Institution next.

RI were off to a good start. They played well defensively to shut down the DHS offense. RI’s stellar defensive performance created several offensive opportunities which they capitalized on. As they knocked down their shots, RI got into a rhythm to continue their scoring streak and outscored DHS 12-3 in the first quarter.

As DHS continued their struggles both offensively to score and defensively to stop RI’s offense, RI continued to score to extend their lead farther. RI were up 30-7 at the half.

Going into the third, DHS found some momentum on their defensive end to contain the efficient scoring of RI. However, RI’s defense had already affected the DHS players’ shooting rhythm. Even though there were a few open shots, DHS were not able to knock down these shots that were usually made. While they contained RI to just nine points, they only scored five themselves.

Due to the balanced scoring from RI which was led by Choo Jieying’s (RI #8) game-high nine points, they eventually cruised past DHS with a score of 57-17 to advance to the semi-final as first of group X.

RI captain, Choo Jieying (RI #8), commented, “I think our ball movement was good and our defense was able to get us turnovers for offense. There was ball rotation and communication. I am very happy with my team’s performance as we put up a really strong defense and fought hard. I hope we can continue this effort in our semi-final and also to the final if we are able to get there.”
