OCBC Arena, Wednesday, April 26, 2017 — Yishun Junior College (YJC) made use of their size and height advantage to take down Catholic Junior College (CJC) 46-26 in the National A Division Basketball Championship.

With this win, YJC have a 3-2 win-loss record after defeating Victoria Junior College (VJC) and Eunoia Junior College (EJC) but losing to Anderson Junior College (AJC) and Hwa Chong Institution (HCI). They end their season with a third-place finish in Group C.

On the other hand, CJC end their season with a 2-3 win-loss record. They defeated EJC and VJC previously but lost to HCI and AJC. They finished fourth in the group.

CJC’s Luke Cheong (CJC #55) knocked down a three to start the game. But YJC’s Sean Tan (YJC #6) quickly answered with his own to tie things up.

Both sides had a 2-2 win-loss record going into the game and did not want their last game of the season to end up in a loss. They hustled hard for every play but it was YJC that got the upper hand and outscored CJC 11-9 in the first quarter.

Down two heading into the second quarter, CJC tried to fight back to get the lead. However, YJC’s size and height advantage proved too much for the CJC players. YJC were able to make use of that advantage to score easily in the paint area and get the rebounds when they missed their shots.

The size and height advantage also prevented CJC from scoring in the paint area easily. The YJC centers created a strong interior presence which caused the CJC players to shy away when going in for the layups. This led to layup misses by CJC despite the good moves to enter. However CJC kept the game close with their shooting and were down eight at the half.

While the game was within striking distance for CJC, they could not find an answer for YJC’s consistent scoring. Eden Oh (YJC #11) scored a game-high 12 points to lead the charge for YJC. With no answer for YJC’s scoring, YJC continued to increase their lead steadily and eventually took down CJC 46-26.

YJC captain, Eden Oh (YJC #11) “I think we started out pretty bad but we got into a momentum for the game and managed to break past the opponent’s defense. And I think this wouldn’t be possible without the teamwork we had and putting in effort throughout the game.”

“I think we have played pretty well for all our matches despite not getting into the second round. But it had been a good journey with my teammates, seeing us bond together and play together. That was all that mattered and I am very happy for that.”
