OCBC Arena, Wednesday, April 26, 2017 — Dunman High School (DHS) got the job done with the 60-29 victory over Tampines Junior College (TPJC) in the National A Division Basketball Championship.

With this win, DHS have a 3-2 win-loss record. They defeated River Valley High School (RVHS) and Meridian Junior College (MJC) but lost to Pioneer Junior College (PJC) and National Junior College (NJC) previously. This victory ties DHS with MJC for second place. Whoever advances will be decided after NJC play RVHS.

On the other hand, this loss drops TPJC a 0-5 win-loss record. They lost to RVHS, MJC, NJC and PJC previously and have finished last in Group B.

As soon as the ball was tipped, DHS got to work. Gregory Teo (DHS #11) made a drive into the paint area and drew the foul. He made both free throws to score the first two points of the game for DHS. They played good defense to stop TPJC and on the ensuing play, Chan Ray (DHS #14) went coast to coast after grabbing the defensive board to make the hoop and the harm. He completed the three-point play to give DHS the five point lead.

DHS had a stellar defensive performance in the first quarter. They capped TPJC to just two points and went on an offensive surge. Gregory Teo (DHS #11), Tan Yan Zhou (DHS #12) and Irvin Seet (DHS #6) made three threes in a row as DHS outscored TPJC 21-2 in the first quarter.

TPJC refused to give up. They fought hard in the second quarter and upped their defensive intensity. TPJC were able to force turnovers off DHS, but on several occasions, they could not capitalize on their shot and layup attempts. Meanwhile DHS continued to score consistently.

This consistent scoring allowed DHS to continue to outscore TPJC in the rest of the quarters despite TPJC picking up offensively. With a lack of answer for the consistent scoring of DHS, TPJC could not stop DHS from increasing their lead.

DHS ultimately cruised past TPJC to a 60-29 victory.

DHS captain, Chan Ray (DHS #14), commented, “We felt in control of the game. TPJC were very fast in their transition fast-break but we managed to keep our composure for the game and not let it affect our game.”

Teammate Gregory Teo (DHS #11) added, “We were aggressive and started the game strong. We played our game and were confident in Ray to get us the rebound so we were comfortable with taking the shots. We trusted each other to make the correct decisions for the team.”

Co-captain, Erh Zhi Hong (DHS #5), said, “We weren’t afraid of taking the shots even though we were off at some point in time. But we kept trying as we trust the next shot will fall. If we get into the next round, I just hope we can continue to play our brand of basketball.”
