Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 — Gwee Yuan Sheng’s (MS #77) clutch shot in the last two minutes gave Meridian Secondary a narrow 5-4 victory over Bukit Merah (BM) Secondary in Round 2 of the National B Division Floorball Championship.
With this win, Meridian improves to an 8-1 win-loss record since Round 1 with their sole loss coming against Catholic High. They face Northland Secondary next.
However, Bukit Merah drop to a 5-4 win-loss record with Greendale Secondary their next opponents.
With both equally matched, it was hard for either team to take the lead as turnovers prevailed.
Using his size, Meridian’s goalkeeper Muhammad Huzaifah (MS #12) blocked three of his opponents’ shots to keep them at bay.
Advancing with slap shots, both teams zeroed in on chances to score whenever possible. However, both opponents fired high.
The first period ended 0-0.
In the second period, Navin Kumaran (BM #13) finally broke the stalemate with a clutch open shot.
Faking their opponents, Meridian were able to get close to the opposing goal post many times to attempt shots.
Within moments, Yves Denel (MS #11) scored a clutch shot with an assist from Brenden Chong (MS #68) to tie.
However, Tan Shao Siang (BM #10) was not yet done as he fired a straight ball into the goal to pull away with the 2-1 lead.
An alert Isaac Tan (BM #4) then denied two of his rivals’ shots with his body.
As Bukit Merah tried to slow the game, Navin Kumaran (BM #13) went on to shoot under the rival goalkeeper’s underarm to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Goalkeeper Isaac Tan (BM #4) further protected his goal as he rejected two shot attempts from Meridian with his shin.
Meridian fought back in the last period. First, Ahmad Nadir (MS #7) scored, then Wang Zhi Xian (MS #9) scored two consecutive goals to give Meridian a 4-3 lead.
Bukit Merah were struggling and fired high twice. However, Wang Jia Jun (BM #11) managed to tie the game at 4-4.
Thinking fast, Gwee Yuan Sheng (MS #77) then did a clutch spindrag to lead his team to victory in the last two minutes.
Game winner Gwee Yuan Sheng (MS #77) said, “During the first period, it was a good game. Both teams played well and the goals started coming in the second period. I believe that during the second period, we were being broke down by a bit but we eventually came back in the third period. We also owed our victory to luck.”
