Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) overwhelmed Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) with defense and secured the 57-26 victory in Round 2 of the National B Division Basketball Championship.

With this win, SCGS continue their unbeaten streak in the Nationals with a 4-0 win-loss record. They will play against Dunman Secondary next.

On the other hand, NYGH have a win-loss record of 2-2. They will play against Jurong Secondary next and have to win their upcoming matches against both Dunman and Jurong Secondary to stand a chance to advance.

As soon as the ball was tipped, SCGS got to work. Dylen Serrano (SCGS #11) made a quick jumper to give SCGS the lead. Thereafter, they wasted no time in setting up their defense. Their defensive pressure was high which allowed SCGS to forced several turnovers off NYGH.

On several occasions, Patricia Orenza (SCGS #7) went coast to coast and converted the turnovers into fast-break points.

SCGS outscored NYGH 21-9 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, NYGH upped their defensive intensity and were able to stop SCGS from making their shots. NYGH also got into a groove as they started to make their shots.

Li Si Lin (NYGH #21) made a three in an attempt to cut the lead.

However, Nadia Ghani (SCGS #9) answered with a three of her own.

While NYGH outscored SCGS 9-3, SCGS were still up 24-18 at the half.

Despite the efforts in the second quarter, NYGH could not keep it up as they started to miss their shots again.

However, SCGS also shot poorly in the third and could not capitalise on several offensive opportunities to pull away.

At the end of the third, SCGS were up 32-24.

In the fourth, SCGS put the pedal to the metal and never looked back. They played their full court press defense and were able to force several turnovers off NYGH. These turnovers led to points for SCGS as they capitalised on the opportunities their defense brought them.

NYGH were not able to withstand the defensive pressure put on them by SCGS. They made one mistake after another, allowing SCGS to pull away.

SCGS outscored NYGH 25-2 in the fourth as they took the game 57-26 to stay perfect on their win-loss record.

Captain Patricia Orenza (SCGS #7) said, “Most of our scoring came from our defense. We didn’t slack on our defense. We worked hard for every single ball throughout the game. Even though our score didn’t really move much in the second and third quarter, we fought even harder to pull away.”

Vice-captain Nadia Ghani (SCGS #9) added, “Defense transited to our scoring and we knew it wasn’t going to be easy but we fought hard and pulled through.”

“I want to praise my team because we really woke up from the previous match against Chung Cheng (Main) where our defense was really off. We went to prep ourselves for this game both defensive and offensive wise and it paid off.”
