Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 27, 2017 — North Vista (NV) Secondary came back in the final quarter to beat Nanyang Girls High School (NYGH) 39-34 in a close fight in the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Jamie Chang (NV #13) had a game high of 15 points.

Li Si Lin (NYGH #21) led her team with eight points while teammates Ivon Kong (NYGH #13) and Yang Shi Xuan (NYGH #12) had seven and six respectively.

With this win, North Vista improves to a perfect 3-0 win-loss record in the preliminary round and top Group P. They will play Unity Secondary, Yishun Town Secondary and Christ Church Secondary next in Round 2.

However, NYGH drop to a 2-1 win-loss record and are second in Group P. They will play Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, Jurong Secondary and Dunman Secondary next in Round 2.

Both teams got on to a slow start with North Vista pressing for defence while NYGH worked on their backdoor set play. Li Si Lin (NYGH #21) sank an early three while Lydia Ang (NV #7) replied back. A defensive Lydia Ang (NV #7) went strong on her attacker to deny two shots but NYGH still managed to secure their underbasket.

Due to NYGH’s two-on-one defence, North Vista had no choice but to force their shots. NYGH then capitalised on their ball movement to finish off strong under the basket.

Undeterred, Jamie Chang (NV #13) banked in two back-to-back three-pointers, ending the first quarter with North Vista trailing 13-17.

In the second quarter, North Vista were still missing shots. Both teams were hard on their rivals, disallowing either one to drive into the paint.

At halftime, NYGH were up 24-19 over North Vista.

By the third quarter, the momentum started to go downhill as North Vista’s big centre Lydia Ang (NV #7) was injured and had to be replaced, allowing NYGH the height advantage. However, North Vista strategised and focused strongly on their ball movement to get around their rivals.

Feeling the heat, North Vista sent in Lydia Ang (NV #7) again who immediately scored one for the team and boxed out her offensive opponents. She wasted no chance in dominating the paint and helped pull her team together. North Vista did not look back after that.

Both teams tied at the end of the third quarter.

Down to the last quarter, both teams were unwilling to give up. North Vista eventually scored five points more than their rivals to bring themselves the 39-34 win.

North Vista’s Lydia Ang (#7) said, “Our defence only started to buck up at the third quarter. However, our defence in the first and second quarter was sloppy. We had more hustle during late game.”

Teammate Yuki Kung (NV #3) said, “Our rebounds were good. However, we lost a lot of easy baskets in the first and second quarter.”
