Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, February 28, 2017 — Steady scoring gave Presbyterian High School (PHS) an 81-63 win over Christ Church Secondary (CCS) in the semi-finals of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

With this win, Presbyterian High remains undefeated with a perfect 10-0 win-loss record since Round 1 and will advance to the finals to play Woodgrove Secondary.

On the other hand, Christ Church drops to a 9-2 win-loss record and will have a rematch against North Vista Secondary to see who finishes third.

Dillion Yap (PHS #7) had a game high of 28 points while his teammates Kovan Toh (#5) and Tang Kah Wai (#10) had 16.

Eugene Junior (CCS #23) led Christ Church with 20 points while his teammate Pan Ming Hui (#22) had 19.

The first quarter started off with Presbyterian going for a 2-on-1 defence but Christ Church sank an early three just five seconds into the game. Christ Church were aggressive in offence but failed in boxing out which led to their opponents scoring off many offensive rebounds.

Christ Church focused on driving into the paint and securing fouls while Presbyterian High shot from the three-point line. With Pan Ming Hui (CCS #22) leading the gameplay, he was able to drive into Presbyterian High’s defence to obtain easy fouls.

Presbyteria High ended the first quarter leading 20-18.

The second quarter saw Christ Church hustling harder while Presbyterian High started mispassing. Christ Church took advantage by constantly stealing the ball. They had three open fastbreaks due to their steals.

However, Presbyterian stepped up and retaliated with fastbreaks.

At halftime, Presbyterian High had the advantage at 37-32.

Presbyterian High improved on their passing to go on successful fastbreaks and floaters to outscore Christ Church 20-17 and lead 57-49 by the end of third quarter.

Down to the final quarter, Christ Church started mispassing as they grew tired. This allowed Presbyterian High to use that to their advantage to secure easy baskets.

Undeterred, Pan Ming Hui (CCS #22) forced three fastbreaks and won free throws in the process. However Presbyterian High proved too strong and eventually sealed the game at 81-63.

Presbyterian High captain Dillion Yap (PHS #7) said, “We managed to play our best, give all we can and use our team members well. Everyone could play so everyone did their part to score.

“We all contributed together and we did full court press throughout the fourth quarter but we kept changing teammates because we were tired. This allowed us to successfully pressure to get back possession and come back to win the game.

“However, our first quarter wasn’t good because we were too rushed and they played zone defence which disallowed us from cutting in.”
