Hougang Sports Hall, Monday, April 11, 2016 – Defending champions Meridian Junior College (MJC) overcame Victoria Junior College (VJC) 6-3 in their opening preliminary round game of the National A Division Girls Floorball Championship.

Janessa Kong (MJC #14), Alfie Kwa (MJC #36) and Ong Yew Sing (MJC #88) had two goals each.

Four minutes into the game, Gene Tok (MJC #15) assisted to allow Janessa Kong (MJ #14) to score the first goal for MJC. Shortly after, Audrey Tey (VJC #9) replied with the equaliser.

Just a minute later, Ong Yew Sing (MJ #88) unleashed a long range drag shot from half court to put MJC back in the lead at 2-1. However, VJC refused to back down and Pearlyn Chang (VJ #22) fired in a shot to level the score at 2-2 at the end of the first period.

MJC had the scoring edge in the second period. Alfie Kwa (MJC #36) showed skill when she manoeuvred the ball all the way from half-court, bypassing several VJC defenders to put the ball into goal, making it 3-2.

VJC, however, were no easy opponents as Lee Li Xuan (VJC #29) replied with a long range shot from half-court to even the score at 3-3 and give her team renewed belief.

Janessa Kong (MJC #14) hauled her team back into a 4-3 lead when she slotted the ball in before the end of the second period.

MJC exploited VJC’s defensive loopholes in the final period.

Ong Yew Sing (MJ #88) widened the lead to 5-3 before Alfie Kwa (MJ #36) tricked the VJC goalkeeper to bag another goal and seal the 6-3 win.

Captain Ho Lin Xuan (MJC #23) said, “This wasn’t the team’s best performance and the girls can do so much better – they have the potential to do so. But above all, this match has shown that the girls are strong mentally and that we will overcome all the challenges together, as a team.”

MJC will next face off against Innova Junior College while VJC will take on Millennia Institute.
