Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, April 12, 2016 – Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) triumphed 52-38 over Jurong Secondary (JSS) in the semi-finals of the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Nursakinah (JSS #88) had a game high of 14 points while Ivon Kong led Nanyang Girls’ to victory with 11 points.

Jurong had topped their Round 2 group with three wins against Dunman High, Dunman Secondary, and Anglican High.

Nanyang Girls’ will now face Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) in the final, a team they lost to in Round 2.

The teams traded baskets in a close first quarter than ended with Jurong taking a slim 12-11 lead after Ker Wen Qi (#7) sank her free throw.

Ivon Kong (#8) sank a 3-pointer for Nanyang to start the second quarter. Nanyang then extended their lead with fast plays that broke through the Jurong defence. With a place in the final on the line, Jurong fought back and managed to reduce the deficit to only one point (21-22) to end the second quarter.

Spurred on by cheers from the supporters, Nanyang went on to extend their lead yet again with a 4-0 run and utilised a full court press to pressure Jurong. Jurong could not counter the tight defence and managed only six points in the third, their lowest-scoring quarter in the game.

Han Xing Yue (#11) from Nanyang was responsible for many defensive rebounds as she took advantage of her height to gain possession for her team. Nanyang ended the third with a seven-point, 34-27 lead.

The last quarter saw Nanyang pull away with a 7-0 run. Despite valiant efforts from Jurong to reduce the deficit, they missed many of their shot attempts and could not catch up.

A Ker Wen Qi (#7) 3-pointer from Jurong managed to narrow the gap to six points (36-42). However it was not enough as Nanyang continued to extend their lead with fast break layups and impressive defence. Nanyang ran away with a 52-38 victory to secure a spot in the final.

Regarding the game, Nanyang Girls’ High captain Adeline Wong (#7) said, “I think we did a good job. We focused on what we had to focus on and worked very hard. I think we should not be scared for the next game and focus more on trying to defend their (SCGS) 3-pointers.”
