Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 21, 2016 – Assumption English School (AES) triumphed over Bedok Green Secondary (BG) 54-46 to start the National B Div Basketball Championship.
Toh Guo Yi (AES #10) led his team to victory with a game high of 19 points while (#4) from Bedok Green scored 15 points for his team.
Bedok Green took the lead early into the game as (#6) scored a 3 pointer that placed the score at 9-2. Assumption did not back down and quickly reduced the deficit with fast breaks and sharp shooting. A 3 point shot by Jude Huang (AES #11) stole the lead for his team and the quarter eventually ended 13-11 to Assumption English.
The second quarter was heated as both teams were evenly matched and were tied at 15-15. Assumption English started to pull away and displayed strong defence towards the end of the quarter. By the end of the half, Assumption English had a 21-15, 6 point lead.
Assumption English dominated in the third quarter as well, capitalising on fast break opportunities to score. Their tight defence also prevented Bedok Green from scoring inside the paint. The third quarter ended 34-24 with an extended lead for Assumption English.
Despite the score, Bedok Green never gave up and played their best in the last quarter. They made every shot count and managed to outscore Assumption English in that quarter. (BG #4) in particular, scored 11 points including one 3 pointer in the last few minutes of the game.
However, it was not enough to equalise and Assumption English walked away with a 54-46 victory.
Bedok Green next face Woodgrove Secondary while Assumption English will go up against Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road). Both matches will be played on Thursday, March 24, at Clementi Sports Hall.
