Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 21, 2016 – Dunman Secondary (DMN) defeated Guanyang Secondary (GYS) 63-18 in their opening game of the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Raymond Chu (DMN #14) finished with an impressive game-high 24 points for the defending champions.

The game was a one-sided affair from the tip-off, with Dunman starting the game with a dominant 14-0 run. Guangyang only managed four points in the first quarter, as Dunman held a 12-point lead at 16-4 after one.

Guangyang played better in the second quarter but still struggled to break down Dunman’s tight defence. Dunman continued to control the game with stellar offense, extending their lead to 23 points after two.

Dunman were relentless on both ends of the floor in the third quarter. As such, Guangyang found it difficult to generate their offense and also suffered heavily on the defensive end.

Nigel Tan (DMN #13) scored a 3-pointer to spark a series of unanswered baskets from the defending champions as they went on an impressive 20-0 run and extended their lead to 53-10. On the other hand, Guangyang could not find the net despite many shot attempts. Their only basket in the third quarter was scored towards the end with a Gerald Lim (GYS #12) layup.

Despite the 41-point difference at the end of the third, Guangyang did not give up and fought hard till the end. They managed to get some stops on the defensive end and prevented Dunman from scoring easy baskets.

However, Dunman continued to have the upper hand as Ye Xinyu (DMN #6) sank two 3-pointers in the last quarter. The game ended with a final score of 63-18 in favour of the defending champions.

Mohamed Shukri (#9), captain of Dunman, said, “It’s the first game of Nationals and I assume all first games are very nerve wracking so I don’t blame the team for not playing so well, but I also don’t feel we played up to standard. As the national round progresses on, we have to step up our game.”

He added, “I think our team needs to improve on defence. Everything leads to defence. No matter how good others think our defence is, we still have to improve on it.”

They next face Catholic High School while Guangyang will go up against Bukit Panjang Government High. Both matches will be played on Thursday, March 24, at Clementi Sports Hall.
