PESEB, Thursday, March 3, 2016 — Defending champions Raffles Institution (RI) beat Temasek Junior College (TJC) 36-2 in their opening game of the National A Division Water Polo Championship.

Andrea Ong (RI #8) was the top scorer of the game with 10 goals while Oh Shu Xian (TJC #6) scored both goals for her team.

From the first quarter, RI’s swift offense continually broke the TJC defense. Their long passes enabled them to reach the net quickly and score goals. Furthermore, RI’s defence also made it difficult for TJC to pass the ball around and get good looks at the goal.

RI were also able to take advantage of their strength in numbers as they could substitute all of their players every few minutes. TJC, on the other hand, lacked enough players to substitute everyone.

With a set of fresh players being rotated every few minutes, RI were aggressive and managed to intercept TJC passes every chance they got. However, a careless pass by RI’s goalkeeper allowed Shu Xian (TJC #6) to intercept and score their first goal in the second quarter.

With RI leading 18-1 to start the second half, TJC switched tactics and attempted long passes in a bid to break through. However, RI were too swift for them.

RI continued to capitalise on their offense to score more goals in the third and fourth quarter, outscoring TJC 18-1 to wrap up the 36-2 win.

RI captain, Abielle Yeo (#7), said, “I think we played really well for today’s game and especially so for the juniors because they only had one month of training before today’s game. We would still like to improve and I hope my team will continue progressing in their playing.”
