Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 17, 2016 — After trailing at halftime, Bowen Secondary (BWS) made an explosive comeback to beat Christ Church Secondary (CHR) 44-33 in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

This is Bowen’s second win of Round 2 and they are now a step closer to their goal of getting into the North Zone final.

Nicholas (BWS #8) scored a game high of 13 points while Kai Jun (CHR #9) led his team with 7 points.

The 1st quarter saw Bowen playing an aggressive zone defense which forced Christ Church to attempt shots only from the 3-point line, which had little success. Not only that, Bowen were unable to score their fast breaks and Christ Church led 15-8 after the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter saw Bowen switching to a full court press in an attempt to force Christ Church into turnovers. However, Christ Church were able to break their defense and score on their fast breaks, thus ensuring that Christ Church stayed in the lead.

However, Christ Church committed a few fouls to turn possession over to Bowen. Christ Church also became careless in their defense, allowing Bowen to drive in and score their lay-ups. Bowen trailed 20-24 by the end of the 2nd quarter.

In the 3rd quarter, a fast break Nicholas (BWS #8) and a 3-pointer by Yao Hong (BWS #9) gave Bowen a 25-24 lead over Christ Church.

Encouraged by the lead, Bowen became more aggressive in their zone defense and were able to grab more defensive rebounds and score on their fast breaks. Furthermore, Christ Church made a few careless passes which Bowen were able to intercept and score easy baskets, thus widening their lead.

Despite their strong attack, Christ Church were unable to score on their layups and their attempts at shooting 3-pointers were unsuccessful. Hence, Bowen led 34-24 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter saw Christ Church changing to a full court press which enabled them to intercept Bowen’s passes and score fast breaks. Bowen also became slightly careless in their defense which Christ Church capitalized on and they managed to score their lay-ups to reduce the deficit.

Bowen kept up a strong attack by continuously swinging around the ball and faking passes to find a way to drive in and score lay ups. This, coupled with successful 3-pointers ensured that Bowen remained firmly in the lead for the rest of the 4th quarter to take home the 44-33 win.

Bowen captain Teng Wei Jie (#5) said, “My team played well today and we have progressed since our first game. We have been playing better with each game and I think we can progress more and win more games.”
