Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 17, 2016 — Defending champions Catholic High School (CHS) maintained their unbeaten start to the season for the third game running as they overcame a stubborn Hua Yi Secondary side 7–1 in the National B Division Boys Floorball Championship preliminary round.

CHS had already beaten St. Gabriel’s Secondary 8–5 and Canberra Secondary 14–3 in their first two games.

Hua Yi end their season with a win-draw-loss record of 0–1–3 after 6–8 and 3–4 defeats to St. Gabriel’s and Hougang Secondary respectively and a 4–4 draw with Canberra. They have failed to qualify for the second round of the competition.

Hua Yi showed immense resistance in the first two periods of the game before CHS began pulling away in the final period.

In the first five minutes of Period 1, dogged defending by Hua Yi kept the scores level until Matthew Ryan Teo (#9) broke the deadlock for CHS after some good team play. Gabriel Chan (CHS #70) added another just before the period ended.

Three minutes into Period 2, Hua Yi finally had a tangible reward for their brave performance by cutting CHS’s lead by half. Ahmad Khairuddin (Hua Yi #12) showed great composure to round the goalkeeper on the right before slotting the ball in.

The scoreline remained poised at 2–1 in CHS’s favour for much of the second period, before Matthew (CHS #9) scored his second of the game with 31 seconds to go. It was a great attacking move which culminated in Louis Lee (CHS #20) finding Matthew with a clever pass for him to slam it into the net with a wrist shot.

Hua Yi probably lost steam in the third period as CHS pulled away by scoring four more. Five minutes in, a sharp cross from the left by Dillon Ng (CHS #18) found Tristan Yeo (#38) who finished coolly. Two minutes later, it was Cheang Jia Qing’s (CHS #83) turn to get on the scoresheet with a quick turn and deft finish.

CHS added two more goals through How Yi Feng (#80) and Gabriel Chan (#70) for a more flattering 7–1 scoreline.

While Hua Yi have ended their season, CHS will look to remain unbeaten in their final preliminary game against Hougang Secondary. The two sides will meet on Wednesday, February 24 at St. Gabriel’s Secondary School.
