OCBC Arena, Monday, February 15, 2016 — Queenstown Secondary’s late comeback came up short as Yuying Secondary held on to claim a 48-43 win in the 2nd round of the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

With the victory, Yuying extended their winning streak and moved to 5-0 for the season. Defeat for Queenstown meant that they are now out of the running to progress from Group P.

Chay Wen Fu (#6) led Yuying to victory with a game-high 16 points while #7 of Queenstown finished with a team-high 12 points.

Both teams were evenly matched in the 1st half until a 3-pointer from Yuying with 28 seconds left in the 2nd quarter gave them a 15-12 lead heading into the break.

Yuying dominated for large swathe of the 2nd half and built a seemingly unassailable 10-point, 35-25 lead with 5:45 to go.

Surprisingly, Queenstown then gave Yuying a run for their money, going on a 10-0 surge to tie the game at 35-35 with 1:17 left, courtesy of a 3-pointer from #7. Out of a timeout and with Yuying having regained the lead at 39-35, Queenstown were money on a 3-point attempt, setting the game up for a grandstand finish.

Despite the hype of a potential game-winning shot, Queenstown’s failure to execute down the stretch – a costly turnover with two seconds left on the shot-clock and 15 seconds left on the game clock – meant that a famous comeback ultimately fell short.

Emerging victorious was absolutely crucial in Yuying’s bid to secure a top 4 spot, as they still have to play powerhouses Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) and Fairfield Methodist School.

Yuying will know that victory against already eliminated Peicai Secondary and an upset against one of the powerhouses will likely be enough for a semi-final spot.

Yuying next play ACS (Barker) as both teams will place their respective perfect 5-0 record for the season on the line. Queenstown will face Peicai on the same day with both teams still searching for their first win in round 2.
