Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 12, 2016 — Pei Hwa Secondary’s sonic start secured a 45-28 win over Yio Chu Kang Secondary in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

The opening 10 minutes set the tone of the game. Pei Hwa’s 15-0 rampage in the first quarter saw them take the lead permanently as they continued the game with at least a 10-point advantage throughout.

Despite losing the match, Yio Chu Kang’s Justin Ng (#10) finished the game as the highest scorer with 14 points. Goh Jun Wei (#5) led Pei Hwa with 12 points.

Pei Hwa’s points came from eight different scorers, while Yio Chu Kang had four different contributors.

Pei Hwa unleashed a flurry of blows to Yio Chu Kang’s defence right from the get-go and dominated the early stages of the game with a full court press.

Nicholas Lee (#4) of Pei Hwa drained two 3-pointers to open the scoring. Before Yio Chu Kang could regroup, they already found themselves six points adrift.

Pei Hwa’s swift and effective combinations tore apart their opponent’s defence and catapulted them far into the lead with 15 unanswered points.

The second quarter was the opposite of the first, with only four points by both teams over six minutes of play. Yio Chu Kang attacked with more venom and purpose with Justin Ng (#10) as the driving force. Justin was the live wire for his team, giving instructions and working tirelessly for the cause.

However, this was not enough as Yio Chu Kang squandered several clear cut opportunities and missed three free throws.

Yio Chu Kang’s focus started to wane in the third quarter as they gave away possession easily. Pei Hwa capitalized on this and extended their lead to 21 points.

Yio Chu Kang’s last quarter was their best as they managed to outscore Pei Hwa for the first time in the game. However their comeback was not to be as Pei Hwa’s defence hung on to seal a win.

Justin Ng (#10) from Yio Chu Kang said, “We had many shooting opportunities but we did not take our chances. However, it got better as the game went on. This is the first year most of us are playing in the B Division, and as it is the first game of the second round, we were a little nervous. But we will keep pushing forward.”
