Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 12, 2016 — After a close fight in the first half, Christ Church Secondary (CHR) managed to pull away and defeat Anderson Secondary (AND) 51-38 in Round 2 of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship. This is Christ Church’s sixth consecutive win of the season.
Eugene Junior (CHR #4) led with a game high of 13 points, while Yeo Su Bin (AND #16) led his team with eight.
By the third minute, both teams had worked themselves up to a 4-4 draw. Two successful free throws from Josher (CHR #7) coupled with a basket from his teammate Chalmers (CHR #15) were evened out by Rajvir (AND #13) and Matin (AND #9).
An underbasket shot from Rajvir (AND #13) along with a 3-pointer from Khoo Jun Jie (AND #8) pulled Anderson into the lead at 11-10 in the latter part of the first quarter. However, successful free throws from Christ Church allowed them to wrest back a 12-11 lead by the quarter’s end.
Kaiyao (CHR #10) and Jing Jie (AND #7) both got in their first free throws to bring the score up to 13-12 in the opening moments of the second quarter.
Aggressive defence from both teams resulted in turnovers, making it harder for either team to score in this quarter. Impressive fast breaks from Su Bin (AND #11) allowed him to get in two baskets in this quarter, but Christ Church still led 22-21 at half time.
The third quarter saw Rajvir (AND #13) and Matin (AND #9) with a 3-pointer close up the deficit and even the score at 26-26 in the first few minutes. Yet after a time-out, Christ Church went on a scoring streak and managed to widen the lead to 42-33 in their best played quarter yet.
A 3-pointer from Jun Jie (AND #8) got the fourth quarter going but it was matched by a 3-pointer as well from Kai Jun (CHR #9). With both teams getting visibly more exhausted as the minutes ticked away, scoring was less consistent in this quarter.
Christ Church managed to hang on to the lead, and with a basket from Jonathan (CHR #11) in the last 20 seconds, they wrapped up a 51-38 win.
Christ Church captain Calvin (#8) said, “I don’t think we played our best in this match because our mental preparation was not strong enough. It was a bit disappointing but at least we still won. I think we can improve more on our offence and defence, as well as shooting.”
