Hougang Sports Hall, Monday, February 1, 2016 — It was more or less one-way traffic as Greendale Secondary beat Spectra Secondary 9-1 to open their season with a victory. It was also Spectra’s first game of the National B Division Floorball Championship.

Greendale showed no mercy as they scored three goals in each of the three periods. Good teamwork and slick passing was the key as Spectra found it difficult to gain possession of the ball.

The floodgates opened as early as the second minute of Period 1, with Rina Dayana (#28) converting for Greendale. Greendale added two more goals in the next four minutes to dent the morale of the Spectra players.

Even a 2-minute suspension for Greendale’s Nurin Firzanah (#13) six minutes from the end of Period 1 did not affect the lead, as Spectra failed to capitalise on the power-play situation. In fact, there were three more instances during the game where different Greendale players incurred a two-minute penalty, yet they managed to maintain their prowess even while being shorthanded.

A solitary goal by Spectra’s Nurul Izzati (#12) less than two minutes from the end of the game proved too little, too late as Greendale maintained the upper-hand for much of the game.

Nur Shahindah (#10) scored two goals in each of the last two periods to emerge as Greendale’s top scorer and ensure a comfortable 9-1 victory.

On her team’s performance, Greendale’s Nurin Firzanah (#13) said, “I feel it was a great game, but we can do better. Some areas of improvement for us would be our communication on court and our passing and receiving of the ball.”

She added that her hopes for the season is for the team to qualify for the second round after narrowly missing out last year.

Greendale’s capabilities will be tested when they face last year’s 3rd runners-up Teck Whye Secondary on Wednesday, February 10, at Hougang Sports Hall. Spectra will look to improve their fortunes against Orchid Park Secondary on the same day and venue.
