OCBC Arena, Thursday, January 28, 2016 — It was pretty much one-way traffic as defending National B Division champions CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) defeated Bishan Park Secondary 56–3 in the South Zone B Division Netball Championship.

The result ensured CHIJ have two wins out of their two opening matches of the season, as they look to charge into their title defence. CHIJ had previously also brushed aside Bendemeer Secondary 72–3, putting one foot into the second round of the South Zone competition.

The statistics speak for themselves in this lopsided encounter as CHIJ scored at least 10 points in each of the four quarters. Bishan Park started bravely in the first quarter as they managed to eke out two shots, with their Goal Attack (GA) Ang Chu Ling scoring on both occasions. Alas, that was the best that it got for Bishan Park as they only scored once more in the second quarter and fizzled out for the second half of the game.

Ultimately, it was apparent that CHIJ were the far superior side physically and technically. Apart from having taller and stronger players, their fluid teamwork and swift passing of the ball around the court made it extremely difficult for the Bishan Park players to gain possession.

These were complemented by prolific shooting, with the CHIJ Goal Shooters (GS) showing their prowess. Shann A started as GS for CHIJ, while Tan Wen Xi replaced her for the third and fourth quarters. Shann had a commendable 82 percent conversion rate, scoring 28 of her 34 shots. Overall, Wen Xi missed more shots, but still chipped in decently by scoring 17 points.

Midway through the second quarter, half of the lights inside the OCBC Arena Hall 3 were abruptly switched off which came as a rude shock to the players as play was halted momentarily. However when play resumed even with the problem yet to be rectified, both sets of players did not seem bothered and never lost their focus on the game.

On their coach’s game plan, CHIJ captain Alena Ong, who played at Goal Defense (GD), said that they were told to execute accurate passes and “do we what we always do”. She added, “We started quite slowly because of too long a break before the start of the game. But afterwards, the whole team managed to get together and focus better as it got along.”

CHIJ will aim to make it three wins out of three when they meet Outram Secondary School on Monday, February 1 at the Kallang Netball Centre. For Bishan Park, they next meet Bendemeer Secondary School on Friday, February 5 at Mayflower Secondary School.
