Hougang Sports Hall, Monday, January 25, 2016 – River Valley High School (RVHS) recorded their first win of the season after narrowly beating Holy Innocents’ High School (HIH) 4-3 in the first round of the National B Division Floorball Championship.
Holy Innocents’ took the lead, with Eunice Neo (#83) and Jenna Lau (#4) putting in the first two goals. River Valley fought hard but had many turnovers and few shots on target.
A two minute penalty was given to Jermaine Tay (#11) of Holy Innocents’, but River Valley were still unable to score.
River Valley got going in the second period through Joanne Tan (#99) whose shot to the top corner of the net during a free hit made it 1-2. River Valley tied it up at 2-2 but Valerie Peh (HIH #5) bagged another goal in the last few seconds to give her team the lead yet again at 3-2.
River Valley performed their best in the third period with a strong defence that left Holy Innocents’ struggling to maintain possession. An impressive drag shot from half-court by Tan Ruo Bing (RVH #4) tied the score at 3-3.
Both teams fought hard in the remaining minutes but it was River Valley who came out on top with a winning goal by Ong Sze Yi (RVH #7).
Holy Innocents’ captain Jia Xuan (#7) said, “We did our very best today. Our team goal is to do our very best in every match and try to get into the second round.”
Joanne (#99), captain of River Valley, said, “It wasn’t our best game, we didn’t communicate enough. I think towards the second and third period we needed to look up more.”
Alyssa Chua (RVH #14) added, “We did not play to our usual standard. We need to work on communication and we need to use our body more.”
Holy Innocents’ next face Bishan Park Secondary while River Valley will go up against Bukit Merah Secondary School.
