OCBC Arena, Friday, January 15, 2016 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) led from start to finish as they defeated Outram Secondary 80-12 in their opening game of the 2016 South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Lavin Raj (#10) of ACS Barker finished with a game-high 23 points as he produced an assertive display in the paint on both ends. His huge frame enabled him to score easy buckets on offense and block several shot attempts on defense.

ACS (Barker) scored its first basket seven seconds after tip-off and never looked back. They would score 20 unanswered points to start the game, before Outram’s Zhao Sheng (#12) put two on the board with 3:30 left to go in the first. However, Lavin (ACS Barker #10) himself went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter, handing ACS (Barker) an impregnable 25-point at the end of the 1st.

Ram (ACSBR #30) used a nice spin-cycle to score two at the start of the 2nd. He then followed it up with a mid-range jumper to further extend ACS (Barker)’s lead. ACS (Barker) were comfortable and slowed the pace of the game. Nonetheless, they still built a 40-point lead at the half.

Undeterred by ACS Barker’s 8-0 run to start the 3rd, Outram continued to show spirit in their play. A few hustle plays went Outram’s way and they managed to pour in a couple of baskets to close the quarter.

ACS (Barker)’s full court press proved effective in the final quarter as they would go on a 15-0 run over an eight-minute span to make it 76-11 before closing the game out with ease to start their season with a commanding victory.

Zhao Sheng (#12), captain of Outram, said, “Our defence were not as good as we expected it to be.”

He added,” We have to improve on our hustle plays and play with more aggression on defense.”

Clifford Chia (#27) of ACS (Barker) commented, “We learnt more about ourselves today. We want to improve in our next game.”

Outram next face Raffles Institution while ACS (Barker) play Peirce Secondary. Both games will be played on Wednesday, January 20, at OCBC Arena.
