Singapore Institute of Management, Wednesday, September 30, 2015 — In a game that went all the way to five sets, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) eked out a 3-2 win over three-time champions Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) to clinch their first ever Singapore University Games (SUniG) women’s volleyball championship title.
Defensive plays made the difference for NTU and siblings Chew Jia Le (#14) and Chew Jia Hui (#15) stood out at the net, roofing several of SIM’s spikes in the game.
“It definitely feels great, because we had previously lost to them 0-3 during the round robin game,” said Chew (#15).
“We were frustrated and confused at some points, and allowed SIM to take away some sets. Thankfully, we recovered quite quickly, and that is really important.”
She added, “To come back and win 3-2 is really satisfying and thanks to everyone on the team that we were able to do it.”
For SIM, mistakes were their bane, allowing them to concede the first set, which was a huge turning point of the game.
However, their comeback efforts were laudable as they fought through a deficit to eventually clinch an exhausting second set.
The set saw both teams at a deadlock until Lim Chien Wen (#9) roofed Chew’s (#14) spike to help SIM win 31-29.
After going back-and-forth in the third and fourth set, SIM’s fatigue gradually gave way to unforced mistakes, which allowed NTU to seal the fifth set victory to become newly-minted champions.
