Singapore Institute of Management, Wednesday, September 23, 2015 — Defending champions National University of Singapore (NUS) shook off a late scare to beat Nanyang Technological University (NTU) 3-1, clinching their second straight win in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) men’s volleyball championship.

Lu Zuokun (#3) stood out on both ends, spiking and roofing his way to keep NUS ahead. Likewise, NTU counterpart Johner Tham (#5) was also similarly effective, but lacked a little support from his team-mates.

When Lu (#3) was off the floor, Ng Tianfong (#12) and Yew Zi Wei (#13) were present to maintain the NUS offence.

Defensively, NUS were a class higher than their opponents with their well-timed blocks. Alongside several unforced mistakes, NTU’s defensive loopholes were exploited by the defending champions, and that ultimately led to their downfall.

However, despite the loss, NTU had a good takeaway from the game, which came from their attack on the NUS libero position. NUS were significantly weaker in the middle and this allowed NTU to force a fourth set through this knowledge.

NUS will next face Singapore University of Technology and Design on Friday, 7.15 p.m., while NTU will face Singapore Institute of Management in the following game at 8.30 p.m. Both games will be played at the Singapore Institute of Management.
