SUniG men's floorball NTU vs NUS

The NUS men’s floorball team defeated NTU 5-1 in the final to clinch their first title in three years.

Singapore Institute of Management, Wednesday, September 16, 2015 — Stellar defending helped National University of Singapore (NUS) defeat powerhouses Nanyang Technological University (NTU) 5-1 in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) floorball final and clinch their first title since 2012.

Led by Glendon Phua (#20), NTU had earlier overwhelmed NUS 12-4 in their last round robin game on Monday.

However, it was a different storyline in the final.

Bouncing back from the disappointing loss, a more determined NUS did a much better job containing NTU’s offensive plays.

While Mikael (#2) helmed the offence, Zheng Jie (#25) did his part on the defensive end, holding down the fort at the goal post. The custodian saved a total of eleven NTU attempts at point blank.

“After our loss on Monday, NTU had the upper hand and were more confident than us, but we came in with nothing to lose,” said Zheng Jie (#25), who had previously suited up for Victoria Junior College.

“I really like to thank my team for giving me the support and always encouraging me to focus, so it’s really a team effort that helped us win.”

Despite NTU’s persistence, their attempts simply could not find the back of the net, allowing NUS to gradually pull away.

Their title hopes were growing bleak when Guo Wei (#19) and Vikash (#70) gave NUS a three-goal advantage with nine minutes to play in the third period.

Lady Luck was simply not on NTU’s side, as an attempt by Benjamin Tan (#17) was deflected off the crossbar.

To add to their woes, Mikael (#2) scored his second goal on the ensuing possession to seal the victory for NUS.

NUS captain Haikal (#17) was all praises for goalie Zheng Jie (#25).

“Zheng Jie is a promising player, and I feel confident with him around.”

Adding that having a game plan made the difference in the final, he said, “We didn’t have much of a game plan in the previous game, and this game, our coach gave us a proper game plan, which gave us a lot of confidence.”
