Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, July 8, 2015 — A strong fourth-quarter finish helped Edgefield Secondary beat Naval Base Secondary in their third game of the North Zone C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship, increasing their chances of qualifying for a second round spot.
The victory is Edgefield’s second, while Naval Base have lost all their games and will end their season prematurely.
Audrey Ong (#9) led Edgefield with a game-high 13 points, while Naval Base had an eight-point effort from Qistine Tan (#4).
While Edgefield had the upper hand, taking a five-point first quarter lead, Naval Base stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring Edgefield 7–2 to tie the game at 11 apiece. Tan (#4) had six of her eight points in the frame.
Unfortunately for Naval Base, Edgefield regrouped and regained their lead after the break, eventually sealing the game with a 9–0 fourth quarter output.
“It was a good game. Both teams didn’t give up and played well,” Ong (#9), Edgefield’s captain, said.
“At the start, we were a little discouraged but our teammates and coach boosted our confidence, so we persevered and tried harder.”
Despite the win, Edgefield will face a daunting challenge in their final game. They will next face North Vista Secondary, who currently stands at the top of the group without a single loss. The game will be played at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
