Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Tuesday, May 12, 2015 — Jurong Junior College (JJC) brought down Catholic Junior College (CJC) 17–5 to clinch third in the National A Division Rugby Championship (Plate). They had previously defeated CJC 12–7 in the preliminaries.

Jurong Junior College came in fourth in the Plate Championship last year.

Ian Chai (CJC #12) broke through for an undefended run for the line, but JJC eventually stopped him. Ian then passed off the ball to the right side of the offense, with Bryan Wong (#24) on the run, but JJC’s defence did not budge. They stopped CJC’s runs and took over the possession.

Vivian George (CJC #13) soon had another scoring opportunity, but was brought down close to the try line.

CJC started off well, retaining possession mostly in their offensive half, but JJC were unfazed. JJC capitalized on their defence and gained momentum of the game bit by bit. Their defensive efforts paid off when they converted on a turnover to score the first try. Wayne Tan (#1) broke through for the try and Nixon Lim (#8) converted to make it 7–0.

Thereafter, Wayne (JJC #1) looked to score another try and sprinted for the line, but was brought down by his defenders. He sustained an injury and was substituted by Jia Yunxiang (#23).

Just before halftime, Chia Cheng Da (JJC #11) went ahead of his defenders but CJC caught up and tackled just in time to break his run. JJC took a 7–0 lead going into the halftime break.

A few minutes into second half, JJC earned a penalty but Nixon’s (#8) attempt was off the mark. Thereafter, the lightning alert went off to stop the play.

The second half resumed shortly after. Moments after, CJC had a chance to score through a penalty, but Aaron Chong (#8) failed to convert. JJC continued to make timely tackles to gain possession, and extended their lead to 12–0 when Lee Ke Xian (#13) scored the second try.

CJC then scored their first try of the game when Wong Jun Han (#16) sprinted ahead of all his defenders to touch down (5–12).

Just before the whistle sounded, Benjamin Lim (JJC #5) pushed past the defence to score one for JJC to end the game 17–5 winners.

JJC captain, Wayne (#1), said, “It was a good game. We followed our coaches’ plans and it showed results, and worked well. We came into the game with a winning mentality. It’s a game that we fought in before, and we knew what to improve on compared to the other time, since we already met them in the qualifying round.”

On their season, Wayne added, “At the start it was very good. Once we went into the Plate round, it started going down because we lost to PJ. It was a match that we were looking forward to, a close match that we thought we could have won.”
