Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, March 31, 2015 — Cassandra Yeo (#12) came up clutch in crunch time, scoring the game-winning basket with 35 seconds remaining to give Jurong West Secondary the 37–34 win over Zhonghua Secondary in the preliminary round of the National B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

“We managed to play decently in the first and last quarter. Though we made mistakes along the way, we tried to cut it down,” said Yeo (#12).

Lena Tan (#5) led Jurong West with a team-high nine points, while Ruth Chong (#13) had 13 points for Zhonghua.

Yeo (#12) and Ginny Kuak (#13), got off to a quick start, as the duo scored all nine of Jurong West’s points in the opening frame.

While the pair propelled Jurong West to an early four-point lead, Zhonghua were quick to respond and came back to tie the game in the second quarter.

Zhonghua regrouped during the break and opened the third quarter with a 9–0 run, holding Jurong West scoreless for the first seven minutes. Two quick baskets from Tan (#5) and Liang Keying (#8) helped reduce the deficit to five points to enter the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, despite Zhonghua’s efforts to extend the lead, Jurong West did not back down and kept biting back.

It was back-and-forth between both teams until Yeo (#12) nailed a dagger from the high post with 35 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession, a lack of communication resulted in a crucial Zhonghua turnover and gave the possession up to Jurong West. Liang (#8) went on to make a free throw to seal the 37–34 win.

“I am proud that my team did not give up and gave a good fight, despite being down by six points in the last quarter,” said Jurong West captain, Yeo (#12).

Jurong West improve to a 1–2 win-loss record, while Zhonghua have lost their third straight game. Both teams will not be advancing to the second round.
