Jurong East Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 11, 2015 — Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) rode a strong second half to defeat first-time finalists Bukit Panjang Government High 29–14 and clinch the West Zone C Division Netball Championship title.
Goal shooter Yit Ching and goal attack Kaslyn were effective on the offensive end, making all their shots to give Bukit Panjang the early 6–2 lead. Goal keeper Jia Yi made several stops on the defensive end against MGS’s shooters, but they kept their cool to reduce the deficit to a single point at the end of the first quarter.
The game went back and forth in the second quarter, but MGS would eventually pull away with a three-point lead, as Bukit Panjang entered a shooting slump.
Bukit Panjang’s shooting woes continued in the second half, as their shooters could not get the ball to sink. On the contrary, MGS enjoyed a better output through goal attack Grace Poong, who came off the bench to provide the offensive spark.
Wing attack Mirielle Teo was also quick on her feet to sap Bukit Panjang’s offence to bolster MGS’s lead. MGS defence limited the first-time finalists to only a single point in the fourth quarter to clinch the title.
“It feels great to get back the title and I’m very very proud of my team. We managed to pull through all four quarters and the team really fought very hard and gave their best,” said MGS captain Grace Poong.
On the upcoming Nationals, Poong said, “I’m very confident that my team will put in their 100 per cent and we’re confident that we’ll go far in the Nationals.”
