Jurong West Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 25, 2015 — A remarkable 25-point effort from Reece Low (#15) propelled Pioneer Secondary to a 48–38 victory over Tanglin Secondary in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
With the victory, Pioneer will feature in their first semi-final since 2003, when they finished fourth.
Tanglin got off to a quick start, outscoring Pioneer 12–2 in the first seven minutes of the game. However, led by Ng Pin Jie (#4) and Low (#15), Pioneer’s full court defensive press in the remaining minutes of the opening quarter proved effective, helping them to a 7–0 run to trail by three points.
Pioneer continued their momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Tanglin 21–10 to claim the lead. Low (#15) was unstoppable in the paint, as he dominated the boards for second-chance baskets. Against a smaller-sized Tanglin, Low also recorded an impressive seven blocks in the quarter, en route to a total of 11.
In the second half, Zeng Zhixin (#6) stepped up for Tanglin with crafty plays on the offensive end, drawing several fouls to earn chances at the charity stripe. Zeng (#6) was also effective on the defensive end, as he locked down Pioneer’s Eric Hoe (#6) to hinder their offensive rhythm.
Despite Zeng’s (#6) efforts at keeping the game close, the Tanglin bench squandered opportunities through costly turnovers, allowing Pioneer to hold on for the eventual 10-point victory.
Pioneer improve to a 4–0 win-loss record in the second round, while Tanglin have lost their third straight game and saw their season come to an end.
Pioneer will next play Jurong West Secondary, who have yet to concede a game as well. The game will be played on February 27, 1.45 p.m. at Jurong West Sports Hall.
