River Valley High School, Friday, February 13, 2014 — Commonwealth Secondary (CWSS) defeated Zhenghua Secondary (ZSS) 26–20 in the preliminary round of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.

Commonwealth previously defeated Juying, Yusof Ishak, Tanglin and Boon Lay 31–8, 50–5, 35–16 and 29–8 respectively. With both teams holding a prior 4-1 win-loss record, the game was a fairly close affair with a second round spot at stake.

With the win, Commonwealth joins Methodist Girls’ in moving on to the second round, while Zhenghua bow out of the competition after finishing third in Group B with a 4-2 win-loss record.

Commonwealth took the lead within the first few minutes of the start but Zhenghua narrowed the margin with successive turnovers to end the first quarter slightly behind CWSS at 7–8.

The attack of both teams started to suffer from bad shooting spells and stepping errors in the second quarter. As a result, it was a low-scoring affair towards the end of the game with just seven goals between the teams. Commonwealth led 12–10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Zhenghua’s Goal Shooter opening the scoring for her team by potting in two consecutive shots to draw level at 12–12. However, Commonwealth’s GA, Zoe Lim, soon responded with a goal of her own. ZSS managed to intercept the ball in the center-third on a number of occasions which allowed them to pot in consecutive goals to narrow the deficit in the third quarter.

Zhenghua outscored Commonwealth 6–5 to trail by one (16-17) heading into the final quarter.

Commonwealth turned in a better performance in the final quarter by showing stronger team chemistry and good shooting. They managed to force multiple Zhenghua turnovers and executed their play with their swift and accurate passes throughout the game.

Commonwealth went on a 5–0 scoring run towards the end to seize a 6-point lead which helped them to the eventual 26–20 victory, securing their spot in the second round.

Commonwealth’s captain, Jazlyn Lim, said, “We played better in the second half as we communicated on court. Our shots were going in, our runs were more effective and the flow was smoother. Zhenghua put up a tough fight, they were hungry for the win as well and fought hard for every ball.”

“We’ll definitely keep trying our best for all our matches in the second round. Even if we do not make it to the top four, we will just do what we can,” she added.
