Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, February 13, 2015 — River Valley High survived a third quarter scare to defeat Tanglin Secondary 46–40, recording their first victory in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
River Valley now hold a 1–2 win-loss record, while Tanglin record their first loss in two games.
Despite the loss, Tanglin enjoyed a laudable 19-point effort from Zeng Zhixin (#6), while Jacob Tan (#4) and Lin Bak Hin (#14) scored 14 points each for River Valley.
Zeng (#6) kept the game close for Tanglin with six of his 19 points in the opening quarter, but two straight baskets from River Valley’s Tan (#4) and Lin (#14) gave them the early six-point lead.
Tanglin were aggressive and pesky on the defensive end, collecting several offensive boards and steals to fuel their offence. Zeng (#6) came up big in the second quarter to keep the score close, recording nine out of Tanglin’s 10 points.
A defensive breakdown, coupled with a temporary shooting slump, spelled trouble for River Valley in the third quarter. They were easily handled by Tanglin, and were outscored 6–13, conceding the lead to the latter at the end of the quarter.
However, in the closing quarter, Tanglin were worn out by fatigue and committed crucial turnovers, allowing River Valley to capitalize. River Valley handed Tanglin a taste of their own medicine through a 12–5 run, reclaiming the lead and clinching the six-point victory.
River Valley will next play Hua Yi Secondary, while Tanglin will face off against Jurong West Secondary. Both games will be played on February 17, 1.45 p.m. at Jurong West Sports Hall.
