River Valley High School, Friday, January 30, 2015 — Bukit Panjang Government High opened their West Zone B Division Netball Championship campaign with a 53–6 win over Regent Secondary.
This was the first match of the season for Bukit Panjang who finished fourth in last year’s zonal competition. Regent had previously defeated Hua Yi Secondary and NUS High 51–2 and 25–13 respectively.
Both teams were neck-and-neck, maintaining their centre pass possession and scoring alternate goals in the first few minutes of the quarter. However, Regent could not maintain their momentum, allowing eight unanswered goals from Bukit Panjang to trail 2–14 lead after the opening quarter.
Regent struggled with their passes in the second quarter which allowed their opponents to make easy interceptions. Bukit Panjang extended their domination by executing their chances well with their long lobs and accurate passes, pulling ahead to lead 28–3 by half time.
Regent were more coordinated towards the end of the third quarter to play a much better game, scoring two more points to trail 5–39. However, Bukit Panjang’s shooters were still able to break away from their opponents to get the ball with their quick rotation and effective passes.
Keen to narrow the gap, Regent continued to give their opponents a strong fight till the final whistle. However, their defensive efforts were not enough to force sufficient Bukit Panjang turnovers to reduce the point deficit, leaving the latter to seal the game 53–6 winners.
Bukit Panjang’s captain, Celine Chua, said, “I think we could have done better for today’s match. However, I felt that we did well in pressuring our opponents and making the interceptions.”
“I think that our toughest competitor in this grouping would be Yuan Ching,” she added.
Regent’s captain, Ang Jia Yi, said, “Although we did not perform well for today’s match, I believe that my team will continue to work hard and do better for our next game.”
Regent will face Yuan Ching in their next match. Yuan Ching currently hold a 3–0 win-loss record. The winner of the match will likely to progress into the second round as first runners-up.
The game will take place at Jurong West Sports Hall on Monday, February 2, at 12 p.m.
