Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, January 30, 2015 — North Vista Secondary (NVS) defeated Deyi Secondary (DYS) 35–33 in the preliminary round of the North Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
North Vista improve to a 3–0 win-loss record, while Deyi dropped to 2–1. Both teams are through to the second round.
Sheryl Koh (NVS #7) led North Vista with 11 points while Ashmita Rai (DYS #7) had 14 points for Deyi.
In the first quarter, North Vista defended well which prevented Deyi from breaking through. Deyi missed a few rebounds, which allow North Vista to obtain second-chance baskets. North Vista were leading until the last minute of the quarter, when Ashmita (DYS #7) managed to score two straight baskets to give Deyi a 9–6 lead.
During the second quarter, North Vista made multiple interceptions, allowing them to catch up and tie the game at 11–11 with three minutes left to play. Monica Lim (NVS #13) broke the tie to give North Vista a 12–11 lead. North Vista took every chance they had, which allowed them to end the quarter with a lead of 15–11.
The third quarter was fairly intense with multiple lead changes. North Vista held a 21–20 lead with two minutes left. Ashmita (DYS #7), with help from her teammates, managed to add five points to the team at the end of the quarter to give Deyi a 25–21 lead.
In the fourth quarter, both teams played aggressively. With a minute left, Deyi were up 33–31. Nur Linda (NVS #12) tied the game at 33 apiece with a layup. Helisa (NVS #8) took the team to victory with an under-basket shot, sending North Vista into the second round with an unbeaten record in Round 1.
North Vista’s leading scorer, Sheryl Koh (#7) commented, “The game was very fast and intense. I was nervous during the game and I felt that I could do better. We missed quite a lot of shots and I felt that our shooting can be improved for the next round.”
North Vista captain, Monica Lim (#13) said, “The team did not start off well, but we slowly picked up the game after the second quarter. I felt that the team communication can be improved and they should have more trust and confidence in themselves.”
