Jurong West Sports Hall, Wednesday, January 28, 2015 — Jurong Secondary (JSS) used a fourth-quarter comeback to beat Unity Secondary (USS) 46–41 in the first round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Nur Khardiyanty Bte Kamarudin (#9) had a game-high 16 points for Jurong while Siti Nur Athirah Bte Arnuar (#10) had a team-high 11 points for Unity.
A fierce start saw both teams taking turns to add points to the scoreboard. This resulted in an even score of 11–11 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Unity stepped up on both their offense and defense while Jurong struggled to keep up. Together with an impressive three-pointer by Maisarah Sauki (#7) in the last minute of the quarter, Unity managed to outscore Jurong 13–5 to take a 24–16 lead into the half-time break.
However, despite the deficit, Jurong remained unfazed. The team began to fight back in the second half of the game, closing the gap to just four points by the end of the third quarter (30–34).
The tables were turned as a lay-up from Amanda Tang (#5) in the last quarter helped Jurong overtake Unity on the scoreboard. With just a minute to go, Jurong scored four consecutive points, while Unity were unable to regain the lead, to secure a 46–41 victory.
Jurong’s captain, Syahidah Hashim (#7), said, “We were nervous at the start. However, as we began to get our confidence back, we managed to fight through with teamwork and encouragement from each other.”
Unity will play Dunearn Secondary at 1.45 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, while Jurong will face Assumption English School at 1.45 p.m. on Friday, January 30. Both games will take place at Jurong West Sports Hall.
