Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, January 23, 2015 — A strong second half surge by Zhenghua Secondary was not enough as Pioneer Secondary sealed the 54–41 victory in their third game of the first round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Pioneer had previously defeated Chestnut Drive Secondary 61–12 and earned a much-needed 59–31 victory over Nan Hua High. Zhenghua have lost their second straight game.
Reece Low (#15) led Pioneer with a game-high 26 points, including five blocks in the contest, while eammate Ng Pin Jie (#4) added 17 points.
Low (#15) dominated the post in the opening half, pouring in 18 points in the frame alone. Along with Ng (#4), the pair combined for 30 of Pioneer’s 39 first-half points.
Pioneer’s momentum came to a halt in the second half as Zhenghua revised their defensive tactics, outscoring Pioneer 15–5 in the third quarter. Zhenghua executed lockdown defence on Low (#15), forcing turnovers whenever Pioneer’s backcourt tried to feed him passes in the post.
Zhenghua’s defensive efforts paid off slightly, but Pioneer responded point for point in the final quarter, as the latter held on to their lead and closed out the game with a score of 54–41.
“As a point guard, I think I did really badly. I was always rushing and I had bad decisions,” said Eric Hoe (#6).
The Pioneer captain added, “As a team, we need to learn to control our tempers and our game pace. I don’t think we did well in this game, and to us, this is a loss.”
Pioneer will next play Juying Secondary at 12.30 p.m., while Zhenghua will face Boon Lay Secondary at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 29. Both games will be played at Jurong West Sports Hall.
