Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 12, 2014 — Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) defeated Zhonghua Secondary (ZHS) 50–4 in the first round of the National C Division Girls Basketball Championship. Han Xing Yue (NYGH #11) led all scorers with 11 points, while ZHS (#4) paced her team with three points.

NYGH were dominant throughout the game, holding Zhonghua scoreless in the second and fourth quarters. NYGH were able to achieve this due to their big frontcourt duo of Tan Qi Qing (NYGH #12) and Han Xing Yue (NYGH #11).

Both teams started off slow in the first quarter. NYGH were able to generate some shots off good passing, but they missed their first few shots. Tan Qi Qing (NYGH #12) righted the ship by making a baseline jumper. She then played provider for Xing Yue (NYGH #11) to score an easy layup. Zhonghua struggled on offence as they were unable to penetrate into the lane easily, as the height of NYGH’s front court prove to be deterrent.

NYGH struggled to score in the paint in the second quarter, despite them getting the lion’s share of attempts. Nevertheless, they were able to bunker down on defence and hold Zhonghua scoreless in the period. This allowed them to extend their lead to double digits by the half-time break.

The third period saw NYGH’s offence gradually improve. Their strong pressure in the half-court press allowed them to create turnovers, which led to lay ups on the break. Zhonghua’s offensive struggles continued, as they only managed one point off a free throw.

The final period saw NYGH seal the game decisively. They went on a 22–0 run to end off the game, beating the scoring output of their previous two quarters combined. Zhonghua had no answer for the wave of aggression from NYGH’s bench players. NYGH eventually took the 50–4 win for their second win of the group stage.

Nanyang Girls’ High captain, Adeline Wong (#7), said, “I think we could have played a better game. We can improve by starting our games better. As for the season, we will take it one step at a time.”
