Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, August 4, 2014 — A pair of free throws in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter by Frank (#12) propelled Bowen Secondary to a 42–40 victory over Anglican High (AHS) in the opening game of the National C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Yao Hong (#9) led Bowen with 14 points while Wilbur (#14) added 11. Kiren Teo (#9) and Nicholas Quah (#5) scored 15 and 10 points respectively for Anglican High.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the opening quarter. A baseline jumper by Josiah (#7) gave Bowen an 11–9 lead to end the quarter.

Bowen’s offence in the second quarter was largely orchestrated by the front court of Nicholas (#4), Josiah (#7) and Yao Hong (#9), as they combined for several steals off Anglican High turnovers. Anglican High’s shooting woes allowed them to further extend the lead to six points. A timeout with under two minutes to play brought Anglican High back into the game, as two straight three pointers by Kiren Teo (#9) and Jason Wong (#10) tied the game at 19 apiece. Yao Hong (#9) responded with two points to put Bowen ahead at the end of the half.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, a fast break layup by Nicholas Quah (#5) gave Anglican High the 28–27 lead, but Yao Hong (#9) answered with a three pointer to give Bowen a two-point lead. In the closing seconds, Jason Wong (#10) sank a three pointer to give Anglican High the 31–30 lead to enter the fourth quarter.

Both teams were plagued by foul trouble in the fourth quarter, with most of their points originating from free throws. With 30 seconds left, Kiren Teo’s (#9) free throw tied the game at 40. Moments later, Frank (#12) converted a pair of free throws to put Bowen up two. In the closing seconds, Kin Tat Ho (#12) had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but his ball rolled out of the ring, handing Anglican High the 40–42 loss.

Wilbur (Bowen #14) said, “I think we missed a lot of open shots at the start, but we managed to do well at the end. We rebounded hard. We have to make good use of our chances at the basket properly in the upcoming games.”

Yao Hong (Bowen #9) added, “We need to convert our open layups, as we missed quite a few of them.”

Bowen will next face West Zone champions Jurong Secondary, while Anglican High will play Guangyang Secondary on Wednesday, Aug 6, 2014. Both games will be played at Clementi Sports Hall at 4 p.m.
