CHIJ Saint Theresa’s Convent, Monday, May 14, 2014 – Greendale Secondary (GDS) beat Saint Anthony’s Canossian Secondary (SAC) 7–6 to win their opening game of the National C Division Floorball Championship.
Saint Anthony’s Canossian looked to win the game with a 6–2 lead in the last period, but Greendale staged a late comeback and scored the winning goal with two minutes of regulation time remaining.
The first period saw Saint Anthony’s Canossian dominate possession of the ball. They made multiple attempts to score and their shots either went wide of the net or were saved. (SAC #4) then scored the opening goal three minutes into the game.
Midway through the first period, (SAC #18) drove the ball around the post to beat the keeper for a second goal (2–0). Greendale then took a free shot, but it went into Saint Anthony’s Canossian’s wall of defence and the goalkeeper collected.
In the first minute of the second period, (SAC #20) scored the third goal when the ball slipped into the net without the Greendale goalkeeper noticing. Greendale then stepped up on their defence, but the field players were unable to make the most of their offensive plays. On the other hand, Saint Anthony’s Canossian (#18) and (#8) scored one goal each in the third minute to up their lead to 5–0.
Greendale then tried for shots time and time again, but their attempts were mostly blocked. With four minutes to go in the second period, Qistina Bte Mohamed (GDS #25) and Trina Lee’s (GDS #26) shots slipped past an unwary Saint Anthony’s Canossian defence and into the net, thus reducing the deficit to 2–5. (SAC #7) then pulled one back for her team, scoring one with two minutes remaining (6–2).
Greendale staged a comeback early into the third period, as they dominated possession of the ball. Nur Fierzana Bte Zaharee (GDS #8) and Chee Wen Hui (GDS #15) scored one each, just two minutes into the game to reduce the deficit to two (4–6). (SAC #51) then tried for a shot from the halfway line but it was saved by the goalkeeper. Qistina (GDS #25) eventually scored their fifth goal of the game with an assist by Nur Fierzana (GDS #8) (5–6).
Greendale were awarded a penalty shot but Nur Fierzana (GDS #8) saw her attempt blocked by the Saint Anthony’s Canossian goalkeeper.
Thereafter, Saint Anthony’s Canossian tried to widen their lead but were unable to. Midway through the final period, Nur Fierzana (GDS #8) broke through to score the equalising goal (6–6). Both teams then stepped up on their defence, clearing the ball even before their opponents tried for shots.
With two minutes remaining in regulation, (SAC #57) attempted to drill a hard shot past the goalkeeper, but it was saved. Greendale goalkeeper Shannamae Yang-Tay (GDS #1) then saved two more attempts before Nur Ashiqah Bte Ismadi (GDS #51) slotted the ball in to break out of the tie (7–6).
Saint Anthony’s Canossian then took a few more shots but to no avail, as Greendale ended the game 7–6 winners.
Greendale Captain, Firzanah (#13), said, “We are happy to have caught up during the last period, but we need to work more on our attack.”
Vice-captain, Trina Lee (#26), added, “We felt afraid in the first period because this is our first time playing, but we got better later on.”
