PESEB, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — Henderson Secondary (HSS) overcame a shaky start to beat Bishan Park Secondary (BPS) 43–27 in the first round of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship. Muhammad Khairul (HSS #6) led all scorers with 18 points, while BPS (#6) led his team with 11 points.

HSS are now second in Group E with a 1–0 win-loss record, while BPS fall to a 0–2 record.

HSS had a lot of trouble getting their offence going in the first quarter, as their strategy of getting their shots in the paint failed. Their lapses on defence allowed BPS to go on a 8–0 run, giving BPS the early lead. BPS (#6) was one of the key players in the run, as his strong drives to the rim gave the HSS defence a lot of trouble.

Muhammed Khairul (HSS #6) made a baskets to start off the second quarter. His baskets seemed to help HSS calm down in the game. This allowed them to slowly chip away at the BPS lead, eventually pulling level at 17-all. HSS found themselves with a slim one-point lead at the half-time break.

The second half was a different story, as the HSS front court started to come into their own. The BPS players were outmatched in the post, as no player could stop HSS (#15) from grabbing rebounds. On top of that, their loose marking on defence allowed HSS to score with ease. Muhammaed Khairul (HSS #6) was scoring at will throughout the second half, racking up 11 points.

HSS eventually ended the game 43–27 victors, giving them their first win of the season. They will next face Bartley Secondary on Friday, July 4, at 12:20 pm at PESEB.

Henderson captain, Bryan Yap (#7), said, “We managed to calm down and cooperate together in the second quarter. We spaced out better and that got us the win.”

Henderson top scorer, Muhammed Khairul (#6), said, “We were very nervous at the start, but we managed to overcome our fear in the match. We are aiming for at least top four.”
