PESEB, Monday, June 30, 2014 — Catholic High School (CHS) romped to a 106–3 win over Serangoon Garden Secondary (SGS) in their opening match of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship. Travis Thong (CHS #6) and Evan Teh (CHS #9) led all scorers with 16 points apiece.

The win puts CHS joint-top of Group D with a 1–0 win-loss record. They are tied with Peirce Secondary, who beat Mayflower Secondary 39–33 in the other match played today.

Catholic High set the tone in the first quarter, setting a full-court press that proved too much for Serangoon Garden. The ball rarely left the Serangoon Garden half at all. Chan Choon Leng (CHS #8) was one of the key factors in CHS’ press, as his long arms and fundamental defence forced Serangoon Garden turnovers.

Serangoon Garden found some success breaking the press in the second quarter. However, their attempts at the rim were deterred by the huge presence of Keith Png (CHS #15). There were several occasions where Keith was able to force SGS players to pass to an open player instead of going for the layup.

In the midst of all this, CHS gradually accumulated points on the board off turnovers. Justin Lee (CHS #14), Travis Thong (CHS #6) and Joshua Lim (CHS #5) all did a good job of distributing the ball among their teammates. This ensured a balanced Catholic High attack.

Serangoon Garden finally got on the scoreboard with 6:32 left in the final quarter. SGS (#11) broke their scoring duck by sinking a free throw after the foul. In the end, Catholic High finished the game with a 106–3 win. They will next face Peirce Secondary on Wednesday, July 2, 5 p.m. at PESEB.
